| PROVENCE AND THE RIVIERA |
Provence is ideally situated between the Mediterranean coastline and the Alps and its climate is extremely agreeable. Extraordinary scenery combined with a rich historical past of exceptional archaeological and architectural interest and a multitude of celebrations and festivals make it an exciting area to visit. Arles has enough intact antiquities to call itself the “Rome of France”. The Theatre Antique, although apparently a ruin by day, becomes a lovely stage on summer nights. The Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct that is still intact, is three tiers of stone arches that tower more than 160 feet high and is over 900 feet wide at the upper level. Avignon, was the papal residency from 1309 to 1377 and the Palace of Popes is a highlight of a visit to this lovely city. The French Riviera-Cote d'Azur stretches along the Mediterranean at the foot of the last outcrop of the Alpine chain between Menton and Nice. Nice is a large city situated along the waterfront known as the Promenade des Anglais. The old quarter of Nice is full of character and ambiance. Cannes is the center for many festivals, the most famous being the Cannes Film Festival in May. The Boulevard de la Croisette is a wide street bordered by palm trees separating the beach form the grand hotels. The old port in Cannes displays a mélange of fishing boats and luxury yachts. CONTACT
